'Discovering an old photograph'
Staring at the cupboard full of old documents and photo’s I wondered how long it had been since we cleaned it last, and where on earth I would start, so I decided to go from top to bottom, left to right. I pulled out a large cardboard box covered in floral wrapping paper, it was heavy and full of photographs and sheets of paper that belonged to my great aunt Elda.
I pulled out a photo from the middle of the stack in the box and stared at it, I’d seen it before but I wasn’t sure where, it was old and weathered, blackish green mould spotted the left hand corner covering the date, I turned it over, there was writing on the back, perfectly scripted in black ink, it read,
“Elda Lucy Cobbler. 1967, “
It looked so familiar, I walked back into the kitchen sat the photo on the table and walked down the hall to my room where I found the exact same picture on my wall, although it was more recent, from 2000, which was so weird, because Aunt Elda had died just a few days after the photo was taken.
Mother came home and I asked her about it, she told me the woman in the recent picture was our Aunt Mary, in the exact same spot, exact same position, exact same date, as Great Aunt Elda, it was tradition. I was to do it in 3 years, because I was the first born girl and looked like Great Aunt Elda.
